Papers of Earl C. Leake [manuscript], 1890, 1900, & 1962.

Photographs, ca. 1890 and ca. 1900, show Rio Mills dam and the post Civil War wooden bridge and the 1900 replacement iron bridge on the site of the bridge burned by General George A. Custer, 1864 March 1. With these are copies of two Daily Progress articles re the raid, the Confederate Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia and the city's surrender and occupation in March 1865.

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania.
